The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) disburses over 19 million permanent grants monthly to vulnerable individuals in South Africa. As February approaches, Sassa has confirmed the grant payment dates.
Playing a crucial role in supporting vulnerable individuals and families, Sassa distributes grants from the South African government to help cover essential goods and services.
These grants include the Older Persons pension grant, Disability grant, War Veterans grant, Care Dependency grant, Foster Child grant, Child Support grant, Child Support grant Top-Up and Grant-in-aid.
Although Sassa usually aims to pay grants on consecutive days, this will not be possible in February 2024. This is because Sassa does not pay grants on weekends.
Beneficiaries of Disability and Child support grants will have to wait for the second week of the month for their grant payment.
February 2024 Grant Payment Dates
- Older Persons Grant – 2 February 2024
- Disability Grants – 5 February 2024
- Children’s Grants – 6 February 2024
Outstanding January 2024 Grant Payments
In January 2024, Sassa suspended the grant payments of more than 150,000 grant beneficiaries.
Sassa explained that the non-payment of 150,000 social grants stemmed from inconsistencies in grant beneficiary details. These discrepancies include mismatched ID numbers with bank records, inaccurate banking details, and alterations in grant payment methods.
The Auditor General (AG) promptly brought attention to this issue, prompting us to make a decisive decision to ensure that the correct grant is disbursed to the rightful recipients.
To prevent individuals from erroneously receiving grants, the agency took the step of suspending these grant payments.
Sassa said if a beneficiary did not receive their January 2024 grant payment and is found to be eligible for a grant payment; they will be paid during the February payment run.
It was confirmed that they will receive a double grant payment, their outstanding January 2024 grant payment and their February 2024 grant payment.
Where To Collect Grants
Grant beneficiaries can collect their grants ATMs and retail stores such as Pick n Pay, Checkers, Shoprite and Boxer.
Sassa beneficiaries can also choose to have their Sassa grant be paid directly to their bank account.
