Millions of people are set to receive their social grant payments over the coming days. However, due to Sassa’s grant payment policy, not all grant beneficiaries will be paid this week.
The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) is now paying social grants to beneficiaries for December 2023. The grant payment agency is set to distribute grants to more than 18 million people over the next few days.
Sassa distributes several permanent grants to beneficiaries monthly. These grants include the Older Persons pension grant, Disability grant, War Veterans grant, Care Dependency grant, Foster Child grant, Child Support grant, Child Support grant Top-Up and Grant-in-aid.

Only beneficiaries of the Older Persons or pensioners grants will be paid during the first week of December. Individuals benefiting from disability grants and child support grants will have to wait until next week for their grant payment.
December Grant Payment Dates
- Older Persons/Pensioners’ Grant: Friday, 1 December 2023
- Disability Grant: Monday, 4 December 2023
- Children’s Grant: Tuesday, 5 December 2023
The reason why beneficiaries of disability and children’s support grants will only be paid next week is simple. Sassa does not pay grants on weekends.
Where To Collect Your Sassa Grant
Grant beneficiaries can collect their social grants at various retail outlets such as Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Boxer, Usave, and Checkers.
SASSA beneficiaries can receive their SASSA payments from selected supermarkets, such as Pick n Pay, Boxer, USave merchants, Checkers and Shoprite, and obtain this through their SASSA card or by getting the amount directly transferred into their bank account
Alternatively, beneficiaries can choose to have their grant paid directly into their bank account.
There is no need to rush to withdraw cash on the first day. Once the money is in the account, it will remain there until it is needed
Grant beneficiaries can also collect their grant at designated mobile play points.
Using Your Sassa Gold Card
SASSA reminds all grant beneficiaries that SASSA Gold cards will not expire in December or subsequent months, ensuring continued functionality for grant payments beyond December 2023.
Earlier this year, Postbank confirmed the extended validity of all Sassa Gold cards. This alleviated the concerns of beneficiaries whose gold cards were on the verge of expiring. At least 5.3 million cards were due for replacement by 31 December 2023. Grant beneficiaries are now assured that they do not need to renew their expired Sassa Gold cards.
